Nick and Pashyn’s Native Science Report paper was accepted for publication! July 2021.

Three Ashburn Group chemistry students, Pashyn Morimoto, Nicholas Bailey, and Alaina Atanes were honored for outstanding academic achievement at the Spring 2021 Hawaii American Chemical Society Awards Banquet.

Dr. Ashburn was awarded the Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching in May 2021.

Dr. Ashburn was a panelist on “Transforming Classroom Instruction and Design Through the UH West Oʻahu Student Research and Creative Works Symposium” for the May 2021 UH West O’ahu professional development week.

Nicholas Bailey presented his poster entitled “Synthesis of Chalcone Derivatives Targeted Towards the Discovery of Novel Treatments for the Neglected Tropical Disease Leishmaniasis” at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in April 2021.

Dr. Ashburn presented the group’s research on the “Synthesis of heterocyclic chalcones as novel antileishmanial agents” at the American Chemical Society Spring National Meeting in April 2021. 

Pashyn Morimoto presented her poster entitled “Synthesis and Assay of Imidazole-bearing Chalcones Targeted Towards Treatment of Aspergillosis” at the UH West O‘ahu Student Research and Creative Works Symposium in April 2021.

Dr. Ashburn presented the group’s research on the “Synthesis of Heterocyclic Chalcones as Novel Antileishmanial Agents” at the Experimental Biology National Conference in April 2021. 

Pashyn Morimoto presented her poster entitled “Synthesis of Potential Agents to Combat the Pulmonary Aspergillosis” at the John A. Burns School of Medicine Idea Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence Symposium in April 2021.

A brand new Thermoscientific Nicolet Summit FT-IR spectrophotometer has made its new home at UH West O’ahu in December 2020. Only the second one of its kind in the state of Hawai’i.

Dr. Ashburn moderated a panel discussion entitled “Discount Knowledge at the Junior College: Turning Perceived Stigma into Strength” at the Annual Conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in October 2020.

Dr. Ashburn was a panelist for “Teaching Organic Chemistry during the COVID-19 pandemic” hosted by the American Chemistry Society Hawaii section in October 2020.
