Courses similar to BIOC 141
This course is equivalent to CHEM 151 in the University of Hawaii System. If you have already taken CHEM 151 and/or CHEM 161/162, then you will have covered the majority of the material taught in the course.
Target Audience
This class DOES NOT fulfill the upper-level biochemistry course requirement for admission to pharmacy, medicine, dental, and veterinary school. Those programs require a junior or senior level course such as BIOL 402, MBBE 402 and BIOC 441 at UH Manoa or another 4-year university. I would love to have you as a student, but please be aware that this course will not satisfy the requirement you may seeking to fulfill and will repeat most of what you have already learned in previous courses.
Is an online class ideal for me?
Distance education courses offer enhanced flexibility for busy students, but not everyone is well-suited to succeed in the asynchronous nature of online courses. Your success requires a great degree self-motivation and superior time management skills. Many students discover that distance learning is not the best method for their individual learning style and perform better in a traditional face-to-face setting. You may want to visit the UH Distance Education Guide to ensure you are prepared for an online learning experience. Leeward CC offers both face-to-face and online sections of BIOC 141 to provide you with the modality that best suits your learning.

Textbook
No textbook or online access codes need to be purchased for success in the course. All material you will be assessed on will come from my lectures. You may use the Open Educational Resource textbook authored by Ball, Hill and Scott that I have linked in the navigation menu above and for download here supplemental reading and problems. The textbook is licensed under Creative Commons which means it is free to read, download, and print.
If you would like to purchase an alternate textbook I recommend ones authored by Seager, Timberlake, and Smith. I like the Crash Course Chemistry videos presented by Hank Green as well.
Weekly Workload
Each week will consist of watching video lectures, taking notes, practicing problems, and taking a quiz. Weeks 5, 10, and 15 are dedicated to taking a cumulative exam instead of a quiz. While all three exams are cumulative they will focus on the most recent material. To give you more time to study no new material is presented on exam weeks so you can focus on preparation to perform your best.
